I recently updated WordPress… and managed to kill my blog for a certin period of time as well.

Nevertheless, I got it working again by making the Plugins directory permissions 000, and then setting it back to 777.

Who knew plugins could cause so many problems. I think what happened was either PHP Pear, or Apache were trying to access a file in Plugins for WordPress, and the file had “locked” and would not let another program read it. Complicated… annoying.

Is WEP Secure?

Question:
Is WEP Secure?

Answer:
No. WEP at one time was considered extremely, however, now, a skilled hacker can break the WEP passcode in about 40 seconds.

Other common secure formats that exist on most routers now are:
[*] WPA-PSK [TKIP]
[*] WPA2-PSK [AES]
[*] WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]

If your current router doesnt support any of the above formats, ask yourself these questions:
[*] Do I keep important data on my computer and its network shares?
[*] Does every computer in my home have Firewall installed?
[*] Do I live in a populated area where my connection will be easily found? (!! Even if you live in a small town, never assume that no one around you knows anything about computers and/or hacking networks) (!! Even if you live miles away from other houses, its still a good idea to have good security. Got to keep those Department of Ecology Superfreaks out of your network, you know!)

Tips for setting up a good secure network:
[*] Obvious: Make the passcode hard to guess. Never use things such as, 123456789, your name, birthdate, address, street name, anything related to you your location or things you own or manage
[*] Make it at least eight characters long, and its usually a good idea to include numbers maybe even a few other misc. characters
[*] Change it every so often! Most security obsessed people will tell you to change your passwords every three months… I think that every 6 months is a better number, however, I still only see a necessary one year change.
[*] Ex-Girlfriend/Ex-Boyfriend/Other-crazy-person(maybe an ex?) who might want revenge left your house? Ought to change everything then too…

Misc. Information:
[*] Many people look into wide range WiFi devices. Keep in mind, you dont want your WiFi router to cover the neighborhood. If your device allows you to adjust the broadcast power without affecting the speed, reduce it to the point where it only covers your house
[*] Never keep an Ethernet cable outside in an area where an insane stranger can get to it. Security seldom applies (except for your router configuration password) to wired connections

Please feel free to ask questions, question, comment, or give concern.

Windows 7

Let me just say in advanced:

I realize I did this article response rather… horribly.

“Windows 7: Microsoft’s Linux killer?”
On Computerworld.com. Article by Preston Gralla

Linux has been making inroads into PC sales lately because it runs so well on lightweight netbooks with limited RAM and processing power. Windows 7, though, appears to run well on lightweight hardware as well, which could mean that it’s Microsoft’s Linux killer.

At the recent PDC, where Windows 7 was unveiled, Windows and Windows Live senior vice president Steve Sinofsky claimed that Windows 7 used less than half of the 1 GB of RAM on his Lenovo S10 netbook. Making the new operating system lightweight has clearly been Microsoft’s goal. In addition to light RAM use, Windows also strips out a variety of applications, including Windows Mail, among others.

Of course, it’s one thing for Sinofsky for claim Windows 7 runs on a netbook. But how does it work in real life? According to [a] review [the original article linked to another article about Windows 7, which demonstrated the performance of Windows 7], Windows 7 pre-beta works well on an ASUS Eee PC 1000H with a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor and 1GB of RAM.

The writer found that Windows 7 uses 485MB of RAM. Despite that light RAM use she notes:

things are pretty smooth in terms of performance…in my use of the Eee PC 1000H for the entire evening I didn’t have any hang ups while simultaneously chatting on Skype, writing this post in WordPress, editing pictures in GIMP and uploading video files using Filezilla.

She did say, however, there were some problems with video playback. Keep in mind, though, that Windows 7 is pre-beta.

I expect Microsoft to push Windows 7 for netbooks hard. It’s a tremendous growth area, and it’s where Linux has been gaining traction. I wouldn’t even be surprised to see a netbook-specific version designed for lower-powered processors and less RAM.

Given all that, Linux’s growth in netbooks may be just a blip on the radar after Windows 7 is released.

Windows Vista, in my opinion, is a great operating system. Microsoft will admit that, by user opinions, its not their greatest operating system (OS) yet. Many people choose to say that an OS is going to be bad without even trying it. As technology gets higher up, what we run on our computers becomes more resource intensive.
Although Vista uses more RAM than its predecessor, XP, it puts it to good use. It still causes people to stay away from it.

The next version of Windows 7 will definitely attract many people who disliked Vista, even though it has the same user interface (UI). The UI is expected to contain a great deal of touch screen technology, and integrate well into laptops and other portable computers such as Tablets. Windows 7 will work better on computers that currently have Vista, which usually isn’t the case for a newer operating system.

Many computers users want to make their current computers run faster without investing a great deal of money to make them faster. The Linux operating system is extremely lightweight, often using little RAM and CPU resources. At this time, Linux is one of Microsoft’s biggest competitors, as well as Apple’s. Microsoft has a bigger concern with reducing system requirements to make their operating systems able to run on a wider variety of computers, many less expensive with cheaper components, but still able to run faster than their competitors OS.

I think that Windows 7 is going to be a big hit when it comes out, and, if it will run more of the programs that XP was able to run and at the same speed or faster, I expect many people will soon be upgrading, and many buisnesses will be deploying the new OS.

The Sims 3

Commenting disabled due to high spam trafficking on March 19, 2010

Wow! I cant wait.

This article contains: Links to other sites with information about The Sims 3. Some of these have interesting screen-shots that we don’t see on the official site.

I thought I might link to a few information pages about the Sims 3:
First, the official website. This is always the source of the most accurate information, even if they don’t give much away. http://www.thesims3.com

This article is probably the best one out there, because its Wikipedia. Lots of users speculation included!
Most of the following links came from this Wikipedia article.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sims_3

This article (3 good sized pages long) has an extensive list of features we may see in the next generation of The Sims
http://www.thesimsresource.com/article/sims3
This was my ultimately favorite article, and it goes over quite a bit.

This article has a roundabout of the new features, and some explanations from the game creators.
http://au.pc.ign.com/articles/860/860744p1.html

This is a short introduction article, and doesnt have too much information, its also from IGN, the same site as directly above: http://uk.pc.ign.com/articles/860/860687p1.html

Looking for screen-shots? As I mentioned at the top of this article, there aren’t many out yet. Some of the sites I linked to have screen-shots that are not on the original site. Believe me, looking at the screens wont tell you nearly as much as reading the articles will.

BTW: There are no “valid” videos of The Sims 3, besides the original “Teaser” video (which has been idiotically duplicated 100000 times on YouTube with rapid quality loss since all people do is copy others videos. If your one of the idiots who does that, please, stop, you hurt my inside)
Stop looking.

Techniques for finding information about games before they are released: Wikipedia, EXTENSIVE Googling, popular fansites (The Sims Resource requires that you register and PAY for downloads, but, you can read their news articles for free)

What else? You might notice that there is a V.I.P. Newsletter on the Sims 3 website.
You can sign up for the free V.I.P. Newsletter at: http://preferences.fun.ea.com/ea/mf_sims3.asp

Feel free to talk about The Sims 3 by either commenting, or taking part on our discussion boards here:

(No registration required, just post as a guest. We do have double verification, but its relatively easy.)

Thanks for reading.

Two Weeks Past and it Happened Again

This was a anecdote I did for a writing project a while ago. I happen to like it for some odd reason, so, I put it on my blog that no one ever reads.

Two Weeks Past and it Happened Again

An old man, bald on the top of his head, wearing glasses and slippers, woke up in the middle of the night to an unidentifiable noise from the down stairs hallway. He made his way down, the stairs creaking for every step he took, attempting to find the source of the sound. He lived alone, all by himself, in a very old house. The lights had a bad habit of going out at the most inconvenient moments, and so, they did. The man took out a small matchbook from his pocket, along with a small handle he often carried with him. He fumbled the items blindly in the dark of the hallway. He managed to get one match, an light it. He moved the flame to the wick of the candle, and had a small amount of light. A bit after the candle was lit, the lights came back on. He assured that the candle was completely out, and placed it back in his pocket. the man preceded down the hall past a bookshelf, and just a few steps past the bookshelf, he came to a sudden stop. Not only was the table lamp moving, but a medium sized bump under the carpet as moving as well. The man would have wanted this to be a dream, but he knew that it never would be. In sudden gruesome reaction, the man picked up a chair and began to hit the bump. It seemed to have a cushion effect, absorbing each and ever impact. He took the leg off the chair, and began stabbing the bump. The bump began to flatten, and slowly started moving towards the wall, seeping under the floorboards, and going beyond.
It was gone.

Verizon is Wonderfull

That subject title is a major act of severe sarcasm to an extreme point that I don’t think I can ever thoroughly explain.

I recently got a PDA phone from my Brother. A really nice Verizon VZ6700 (or, UT Star XV6700) with Windows Mobile 5.0, and a variety of features that I happen to love, including a 2MP digital camera (not the best, but better than my previous cell phone) with a flash that can be turned on for use as a flashlight, WiFi built in, SD Card reader, USB connection that works well with ActiveSync, descent built in speakers, and so much more.

So, I was ready to put aside my Motorola KRZR (Crazer, is that what they say now? To me its still an acronym.. this younger generation isnt going to understand the meaning of an acronym some day)

I had read about this phone quite a bit on the internet, and was warned by other users who had posted on various review sites that Verizon may attempt to change your plan without asking you first.
When I called to activate my phone, I asked the representative: “Since this is a PDA phone, will my plan change to something different than the one that my current phone has now?”
He said “No.” and that it would stay the same. (Unless I switched it myself, of course)

Lone and behold! A bill for $49 from Verizon for a PDA Data Coverage plan! This plan included everything I don’t need: Texting, Email, and Internet. I already have a WiFi connection in my house, and had deleted my phones Verizon connection (my phone doesn’t even know what to do if I try and connect to the Internet outside my WiFi Routers reach, since I deleted the network that dials #777 for data connections)

So, I called Verizon. I had my plan changed back. I was told I would be “Partially Credited.”
Woah, woah. Wait a minute here: Partially credited? I stopped her (the representative) from moving past that issue with the phone, bringing up the point that I had specifically asked the previous representative if my plan would change or not. I was told that its something that “The computer does for your protection automatically.”
What a load of B.S.
I stopped her again, and asked why. (After all, that’s greatly unfair)
And I got the same answer.

So, I had my plan switched to a “Pay as you Go” plan, with data connections blocked (besides texting, despite the fact that I don’t text, I get the occasional text from a friend).

Were going to see how much this “partial credit” will be. If its not fully paid, were going to send our complaints directly to the BBB (Better Business Beuro) since Verizon has had plenty of complains about this same problem in the past.

I’m rather ticked. Nice phone, horrifying cell phone company.

Last Server Outage (Lost ALL blog entries, and Forum Posts)

Last outage:

The servers was down from approx.. ~12AM 8/8/08 to ~6PM 8/9/08
There was a power outage in the local area, and I believe there may have been a surge. All the computers components seem to be fine, but, all the data either became deleted or unusable. We did a reformat of the server, and reinstalled Ubuntu Server Edition.  Our latest backup was from February 2008… thats a potential problem. We had no MySQL backups.

This means that if you registered on the forums, you will need to re-register, and all blog posts, and forum posts, as well as blog comments and forum bans/logs have been lost completely. Its a completely fresh restart, except for the HTML pages on the site, which were backed up.

Sorry for the inconvenience.
