Danger: Mac and Linux builds available

Thursday, June 04, 2009

In order to get more feedback from developers, we have early developer channel versions of Google Chrome for Mac OS X and Linux, but whatever you do, please DON’T DOWNLOAD THEM! Unless of course you are a developer or take great pleasure in incomplete, unpredictable, and potentially crashing software.

How incomplete? So incomplete that, among other things , you won’t yet be able to view YouTube videos, change your privacy settings, set your default search provider, or even print.

Meanwhile, we’ll get back to trying to get Google Chrome on these platforms stable enough for a beta release as soon as possible!

By Mike Smith and Karen Grunberg, Product Managers

Google Chrome is one of the newest browser platforms that has taken popularity. I think that the focus Google has taken on Chrome is interesting. Instead of trying to supply as many features as possible in their browser, they made their first focus Security, their second speed. The speed of the browser is why so many people like it. More and more people are looking into ways to make their computer programs faster without purchasing new hardware, or paying for new programs. Google Chrome has manged to attract users by keeping their original goals.
I decided to download and try Google Chrome a while ago, after their official release. I found that the browser was very simple, and relatively easy to use. It was very stripped down in the world of features, however this was done on purpose. Overall, I think this is a great program for users who are not very tech-savvy. More advanced computer users that tend to leave their Internet browsers open may want to stick to their current browser, rather than moving from browser to browser.
Google Chrome does not make your Internet faster, but Google Chrome will load much faster than your ordinary browser, and for pages that have large amounts of Javascript, and third-party elements (such as Java Platform, Adobe Flash…) the order and the threading used in loading elements is more efficient.
I expect to see other browsers, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla FireFox, and Opera follow some of the examples Google Chrome has set. Most browsers have been focusing so much on improving the ability to add more, it ends up bogging them down. It seems the new trend in browsing is minimization.

Zyrtec User?

<Ad Salesman>

Okay, so I don’t usually care about sales… but, this isn’t a sale. Its just plain a great buy. If you pay $25 for 27 Zyrtec pills, you probably have noticed that those darn pills cost quite a bit.

Have a Costco card?
Costco offers a generic version of Zyrtec called Aller-Tec by Kirkland Signature (the Costco brand).
Its $15 and contains 300 pills. Please read the last sentence again.

I have year-round allergies. I have never found an allergy medication that takes care of all the symptoms. Aller-Tec (same as Zyrtec) seems to be the best in my case. Claritin made me dingy (I couldn’t cross the road, I kept forgetting if I had looked), and Allegra pretty much didnt do anything. Actual Zyrtec just drained my wallet.

If you dont own a Costco card (Shame on you!), or if you don’t have a Costco near you, it is possible to order this from Amazon (click here).

My attempts to blog more often

I keep thinking of that darned server in my basement… it also hosts an IRC network… but, the main reason behind it was to educate myself on web servers — and that I did.
In fact, I can get them set up and running quite quickly now. I remember the first time I tried, and it really turned out to be quite simple.
Well, there’s my little post for today.

A New Comment System

I am trying out a new comment system that allows users to reply via. email and receive notifications… I have never used this system, nor am I really familiar with it. Let me know what you all think of it if you happen to use it.

A few site changes…

If you visited recently, you might have noticed that I completely cut out the original homepage. Everything immediately redirects to the blog now… the forum system is being decomissioned.

Why?
With little interest in the forum, and no real need for a homepage, this was just a simplistic way to aproach the situation of “I get little to no visitors”.

Also, the blog now has ads on the sidebar, and may soon have a footer ad at the bottom. I consider ads annoying, so I try my best to keep them out of the way.

Windows 7 BETA Now Out

This information is likely to be quickly outdated. This article was written on Sunday January 11, 2009 at 1:16PM, while I was drinking state-issued Orange Juice (…and we really don’t know what they put in this stuff, but, its not that bad…)

Microsoft has released the public BETA for Windows 7. This is, as anyone might be able to guess, “really cool”.
Its my understanding that they will let 1.5 millions users in, the exact number is something I am not sure of.

You can download it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/beta-download.aspx

IMPORTANT: BETA WILL EXPIRE AUGUST 2009!
MUST DOWNLOAD IN INTERNET EXPLORER
Once you get the download going, go back to the page where you get your key. Refresh the page a few times. Seems you can get a total of 5 keys out of the website.

I have already tried this out on a virtual PC, howevere,  I would highly recomend using it on a real computer if its possible for you to do so. I was actually considering decrypting my drive (AGAIN!) so as to do a dual boot setup. The only problem is I know I can only use the operating system until August 2009.

Is OpenOffice better than Microsoft Office?

Is Open Office (at the time, 3.0) better than Microsoft Office (at the time, 2007)?

In short, and in my opinion, No.
But, consider a few things first…

Cons and Pros of OpenOffice over Microsoft Office

  • Pros:
    • Its free. Microsoft Office can be a very expensive program, depending on what specific versions you choose.
      • I should note, students can get Microsoft Office Standard for around $80 in the USA
    • Its formats are completely open source. Other word processors should be able to open OpenOffice documents fine, as long as the programmers included support for OpenOffice
      • It comes with everything in one download, that being:
      • Writer (like Word)
      • Impress (like Powerpoint)
      • Base (Database program, like Access)
      • Math (advanced computation program)
      • Calc (Like Excel)
    • Comes with basic templates, but, Microsoft Office does as well (though, Microsoft does have more…)
    • Highly supported on the major operating systems: Windows, Linux, MacOS 10
  • Cons:
    • It does not have a program with the same function as Outlook, so it lacks a calendar, reminder, and email client.
    • It can be extremely slow on some computers
    • It requires the Java Platform. I personally cringe when I see “Java Required”, since Java has far too many updates, and Java alone takes an extremely long time to install.

Pros and Cons of Microsoft Office over Open Office:

  • Pros:
    • Faster than OpenOffice
    • Requires nothing but Windows
    • Comes with Outlook, featuring email, calendar, and tasklist
      • This is especially useful in medium to large business places running off domain servers, as you can easily send calendar events to others on the same network using the Exchange server
  • Cons:
    • The number one Con: EXPENSIVE! Expect to pay over $100, but, most people who do office work find it worthwhile, not to mention, Office isnt easily outdated for at least a few years

Cons and Pros that both share:

  • Pro: Both are updated frequently, squishing bugs and managing security.
  • Con: Both have failed to perfect their abilities to open other document types from other word processors, which can cause you to loose important formatting. EDIT: In the last year, these issues with formats on major competitors have been largely resolved.

Just a few of the things.

“Living in the Plastic Age” – The Buggles
“Burning Down the House” – The Talking Heads

EDIT: A few things changed. Originally published on January 2, 2009 at 12:17 am, updated at 8:16PM on February 23rd, 2010.

Spam Bots, what they waste

Talk about going green. You know, eco-friendly people tend to target the everyday system administrator for not pushing their companies to install “green” computers. (Though, compared to the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s, computers really are green), why not pressure other countries to completely outlaw spamming, as well as start cracking down on spammers in the US?

Each day, hundreds of thousands of computers send out millions (if not billions) of spam emails. Think of all the resources that takes up in power consumption, you have to run all of those computers, you have to support the network and network hardware for all of those computers, not to mention, you need to host the main servers for the computers processing the information, and what about the SMTP servers that are used and often overloaded?

Computers use more energy when they are processing more information, the higher the CPU resources, the more power they will use. Not only do the computers that generate the spam, and search the Internet for email addresses, and guess email addresses, not only do they have to use high CPU resources to send the mail, but the servers receiving all the mail do as well. Often, one server sends many emails to one segment of email addresses all at once,  that’s a large load.

Think, if there was no spam, how many less computers we would need holding up our email servers.

I get a few hundred SPAM bots in a day on my server.
Those alone dont use much CPU power, since Apache is always running, and PHP usually has a basic cache in the RAM of what is going on for this blog and the forums… but, one thing they do waste that is mine is my bandwidth.

Considering that each spam bot uses a few kilobytes, I should be able to get that money back from their creators, since they are breaking all the rules I have set in place.

Oh well, what can you do?

Windows 7

I tried out Windows 7, legally of course wtih a 30 day trial via Windows activation… not saying if I will disable that or not…

Anyways, I have to say, I am impressed. And now, I feel I must share what I felt about it:

  • Speed
    • For a new OS, running under a Virtual PC that was running a whole bunch of memory resource intensive applications, it was extremely fast.  I didn’t have any of the transparency enabled… VPC’s don’t support things like that very well.
    • Just seeing how it worked, I imagine most XP computers will be able to upgrade without a problem, and without any performance loss.
  • Size
    • My virtual drive is currently using 3.6GB, that includes the file system indexes and all that wonderful nonsense. This is very impressive,
  • Interface
    • Control Panel, and most configurations were the same style as Vista. The number one thing that stood out to me would have to be the personalization panel, which, was very easy to figure out
    • The background can be set up to be a slideshow. I thought this was kind of neat… by default, it changes every 30 minutes
    • Sidebar is integrated into explorer, the bar part is gone. Just stick things where you want them.
    • Start Menu was revamped, again. It was really easy to figure out though.
    • The start menu wasnt filled with nearly as much junk!
    • The Task Bar was organized quite different as well, easy to get though. I didnt notice window preview panes like Vista though, maybe its because I wasnt using a real graphics card
      • The task bar was bigger as well, both time and date were shown
  • Other things
    • UAC didn’t kill me. UAC only opens on valid prompts of concern, having to do with internal Windows settings.
    • Windows Media Player 12… thats a first
      • Pretty much the same layout though… I liked the “Now Playing” feature, where it makes the window smaller and much less intrusive, only doing what its supposed to do
    • Security control panel was very different, though, not difficult. I think they called it the Action Center
    • Problem Reports and Solutions were quite a bit different, and integrated maintenance, troubleshooting, and security
    • MSPAINT (Pbrush.exe) ACTUALLY DOES SOME THINGS NOW! Bit funny looking though…

Those were some of  the main things I noticed that stood out to me in specific.
