Podcast Clients for Windows

Wanting to get into podcasts, but just don’t have the podcast client to download them with? Hate Apple? Don’t want to get into iTunes? Good for you! There are other clients available for both Linux, Windows, and Mac.

Both GPodder and Juice are multi-platform and open-source. I use GPodder, the interface is easier to navigate (my opinion) and the ability to really go in and edit “really advanced” options is available, when needed. To me, it is much easier to use. The second program, Juice, is just as capable, and if GPodder does not work, Juice may.

SpaceWeather — Weather for Space!

SpaceWeather.com is an online website that tells you about what’s going on in your own universe! The site features fascinating photos from earth and space, and many events that you should look outside for. SpaceWeather includes space weather conditions such as the solar wind speed, X-ray Solar Flares, Sunspots, and more.

Along with the website, SpaceWeather offers Aurora Alerts (as well as other space weather alerts) which will call you when Auroras and other mystifying things will be happening, however this is not free. All of what you can get on SpaceWeather Phone can be seen on the website.

Google T.V.

Google announced this month in their “Google Friends” newsletter a service soon-to-be offered called Google  TV. Google TV is going to re-shape how we receive information through our televisions, taking the best of TV (namely the large screen and the HD) and the best of the Internet, and putting them together.

Google TV will be available both integrated with new televisions, or in an external box that will work with your existing TV.

Network Lights

There is a bug, if you begin to receive high network traffic to your website, high I/O traffic to your processor will cause your computer to slow down, especially key reaction time.

Who uses the ScrollLock key anymore? I have not had a valid purpose for it in years — in fact, I no longer am able to remember its’ original purpose.

I found a neat program called Network Lights that can put the ScrollLock LED Indicator to use. http://www.itsamples.com/network-lights.html

Website Updates

Recently, the server was upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04. This has resulted in faster server self-boot times (after failures) and a more stable system (Apache is already running more smoothly).

A power outage occurred last week, 20 minute outage. No manual intervention was needed for the server, automatic statup sequence had no problems. No hardware or software damage (Yay! First time in a long time there has been an outage without damage)

WP-to-Twitter plugin was removed. We are now using a web service called TwitterFeed to power our Twitter page. This has significantly increased posting speeds and stopped a majority of the scrip overload problems.

Any Format to PDF

Cute PDF LogoMany programs are available to convert pretty much any document in to a PDF for a price. CutePDF does this for free for both home, and commercial use. NO watermarks, popups, or ads. That’s only the first best part.

The second best part is how easy it is to use. You do the following: Press “Print” in the program with the file you want to send to a PDF Document, and select CutePDF Writer. You will be prompted asking where you want to save, and that’s it! The program “Prints” your document to the PDF format.

There is nothing complex about this program whatsoever. Non-computer-savvy people need not be afraid. If you need to create PDF Documents, Download CutePDF — it’s a simple installation with no hidden surprises. (Except, you may want to un-check the “Yahoo Toolbar” installation option, unless you want yet another toolbar…)

PDF documents have become a standard for file sharing in the business world. I honestly do not see why, as until these sorts of program came out PDF documents were expensive to create.
