Google Voice for Students

Google Voice Beta was announced a while back, and has since been making progress.
I’m going to make this post short, and not go into a whole spiel about Google Voice.

Google Voice invites for students (and staff) with a .edu email address are being given higher priority to invitations.
For More Information: www.google.com/voice
To Sign Up: www.google.com/voice/students

The following an excerpt from the Google Voice blog:

We’ve found that Google Voice can be useful in many different ways to many different people.     …    We’ve heard college students in particular really appreciate getting their voicemail sent to their email, sending free text messages and reading voicemail transcriptions rather than listening to messages (especially handy while in class).

But since Google Voice is currently only available by invite, a lot of students are still listening to voicemail and sending text messages the old-fashioned way. As a recent college graduate, I can’t think of anything more painful! So starting today, we’ll be giving priority Google Voice invites to students. To get an invite, just visit google.com/voice/students and enter an email address that that ends in .edu.

OpenDNS as Content Filtering

Whether you have kids, you are a business owner, or you just want to avoid bad sites, Internet Safety is a concern for many. Finding parental control or other blocking software can be a difficult task.

There are many blocking programs available, but not many available for free. On my home network, I use OpenDNS which is free for everyone — even businesses. .

OpenDNS is a DNS service. Along with faster name resolution (the main feature it brags), it provides a filtering service from multiple filtering organizations. You can filter just about anything. (Read on for a complete list)

OpenDNS is also great for schools that would like to look into cheaper filtering solutions, or do not currently have one. Another great point is that OpenDNS can be very difficult to bypass as long as you are not an administrator.

“So what’s the con? How do they make their money?”
…in a way you probably won’t mind:
If you incorrectly type a domain into your address bar, and OpenDNS can not guess what you wanted, a search page will appear similar to Google. On the side of this search page, there are sponsored advertisers.

A New Version of Google Documents

A new version of Google Docs is now available. With a slightly different interface, developed around user input, it is for the most part the same. A ruler is now available at the top of new Google Documents allowing you to better control margins (for paragraph or whole document) and more-precise indentation control. Spell check is also now more “built-in” with a red-underline instead of highlighting incorrectly spelled words with yellow. Individual paragraph spacing is also available so that spacing does not apply to the entire document.

A few new features for collaborators has also been introduced, I suspect these coincide with the success (or, what they call success..) of the Wave Protocol. Real-time editing is now available, instead of getting incremental updates to documents whenever you save. Chat has also been added, now no longer requiring you to use separate programs or dedicate space in your document for conversations.

Importing has also been improved, allowing better quality uploads from other formats.

To check out the new features, login to Google Docs and click Settings > Document Settings, click on the “Editing” tab, and check “Create new text documents using the latest version of the document editor”.

Information directly from Google is available about this right here: https://docs.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=176442

Google Says

“These features from the previous version of Google documents, however, won’t be available in the new version:

  • Offline document access via Google Gears
  • Edit HTML
  • Edit CSS “

Also, Default Document Styles are not yet available.

The WePad

It’s just like an iPad with wheels!

Yet another corny-named product is going to be released in the near future, the WePad. Yes, another device that is as difficult to use as a computer, but can not perform as many of the tasks that a computer can is soon to be released this next week on April 27 in Germany (will be more available to US in August, 2010). The WePad is another electronic that you’ll probably want to buy or at least secretly admire, but honestly have no use for. Still, there are a great deal of improvements over the iPad when compared, such as the open-sourcyness, the two High-Speed USB ports (greatest selling point to many), a 11.6 inch screen, 1GB of RAM, a way better processor, support for Adobe AIR, Flash, and Java — oh, and did I mention, the webcam?

These devices sure do look cool, but they can’t do anything my old Windows Smartphone could do. Sure, you can manage your calendar on it and send emails, providing you either get a 3G plan to use with it or have WiFi everywhere you go, but most of the tasks available can be done on a small laptop with a real keyboard. Business persons may find the idea of easier access to their most basic applications great, especially for scheduling appointments and getting the latest company updates. At almost $600 (no plan included), the WePad is ever-so-slightly cheaper than the iPad.

The WePad will be sold in two versions, one with 3G (as well as a slightly better screen, 32GB, and a few more features, not yet specified) and a non-3G (16GB)

Linux and its' capabilities as a gaming system

Linux has always been considered the “want-to-be” of Windows. The bad reputation it has with program support, driver support, and graphics quality has been the biggest offset of Linux. As more and more programmers begin to look at supporting their programs natively on Linux, this idea of Linux is changing. But here is another side of this: for the companies that see no need to provide Linux support (either because they do not believe that Linux is professional, or that Linux will allow them to turn any revenue) there is another option. Even more open-source programs, such as WINE, are changing the definition of “Multi-Platform”. Continue reading

Google Wave Releases More Extensions

Google Wave has recently released a few more extensions to help make your Wave experience more useful. As Google plans to merge Wave with Gmail, I am hopeful that the extensions will end up making Wave a worthwhile experience. Still, I see no spectacular use for Wave. The officially developed, managed, or officially recognized extensions in the extensions list is growing and I hope that they will make the service more useful. Continue reading

Beethoven 9th Symphony Stretched for 24 Hours

Hear that sound? It’s familiar, it’s something you’ve probably heard all of your life. It’s just much slower than expected. Often thought of as the tune to “Ode to Joy”, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony is thought by many to be one of his best pieces. Quite some time ago, this symphony was digitally stretched (see, I made it computer-related) over a 24 hour period without pitch distortion. This stream has been live since 2005, playing just this — quite cool. Continue reading

Goog-411 , 411 Service from Google

Where can I find a free 411 directory service?

Goog-411 is a free 411 service offered by Google for finding local businesses’ address and phone number. Along with being able to tell you this information through the voice service, Googl-411 is capable of connecting you to the call (for free), or sending you a text message with details.

To use Googl-411, just dial 1800 GOOG411 from any US home or mobile phone. After connecting, you will hear: “Google. Say the business, then the city and state.” From the information you provide using your own wonderful vocal abilities, Google will organize the results into listings with numbers. Just say the number, and then (as it explains), say “Details” for more information, or “Connect” to connect your call.

Check out theGoog-411 website for more information.
