Backup Software: Déjà Dup (Ubuntu Linux)

Déjà Dup is a backup program for Ubuntu (and other .deb package compatible operating systems), which is so simple I though it would do the world a bit of good to share it.

For Windows backups, click here.

There is so much and so little to say about Déjà Dup, because there is nothing complicated about it. Click “Backup” and it asks you what and where, click “Restore” and it does the same thing!

Besides selective file-and-folder backup, other features include: the ability to backup to another partition, the local drive, network, online “cloud” storage systems, and (my favorite) Encryption.

If your computer is running Ubuntu, it can run Déjà Dup. System requirements should not be an issue, unless you had something seriously wrong with your system.

To install Déjà Dup, open the Ubuntu Software Center and simply search for “deja dup”

From their website:

Déjà Dup (day-ja-doop) is a simple backup tool. It hides the complexity of doing backups the Right Way (encrypted, off-site, and regular) and uses duplicity as the backend.

For Linux Server Administrators, I recommend using Webmin’s “Filesystem Backup” tool (mainly for Apache admins, not critical data), or Bacula (advanced).

About Jesse Zylstra

Hey! My name is Jesse Zylstra, and I am the administrator of this website. I used to write about free software and programs, online web applications, and new technology -- especially open-source. Now I just write udder nonsense. I also play pipe organ, which I'm told is a fun and interesting fact about me. In the past, I studied network administration. Now I've been trying to pursue a real fake bachelors degree for the last, oh, 10 years or so.
