Future of the Textbook: Kno

Besides the paper, what is the difference between a textbook and a tablet PC? By characteristics of construction, a book has two sides displaying twice the information at once; but, a book simply can’t surf the web, play music and video, and take notes (without damaging the book, of course!)

A new, innovative device was introduced a few months ago: The Kno, a dual-screen tablet PC. The most noticeable feature of the Kno is the dual screen, which opens and closes like a book. What defines this device is the software that the company plans to include with these devices, allowing you to highlight books, add comments and notes, and exchange this information and receive it from friends and instructors. Further plans allow study programs to help students to study and prepare for tests. Continue reading

Spiceworks: Free Network Administration Software (Windows)

Spiceworks is a free program for Network Administrators intended to monitor all sizes of networks. Spiceworks contains many built-in features, plus many extensions/plugins to enhance the experience. Since Spiceworks uses a browser interface, you can access Spiceworks from another computer by allowing the port connection. The main features of Spiceworks are the ability to monitor the computers on the network, create an inventory list of these items and add information to individual computers, monitor disk space, antivirus, printers and toner level, detect software installed, and allow you to track warranty information.
Spiceworks also features an integrated and customizable Help-Desk system, giving you a free tech-ticket type system to monitor the ticket requests of your users.

Spiceworks is made free for any users — even businesses. Spiceworks is supported by advertisements located on the left-hand pane of the web interface, but for a price these can be removed.

We’re Back!

Last Wednesday, the site went offline after a system update. Either MySQL, PHP, or Apache had been changed, and the issue which occurred I was unable to resolve.

Thanks to good timing, I had only gotten the new server a week earlier. And now, we are completely moved over to it. After some literal sparks (improperly grounded ATX cable plus an unsuspecting CD-R/W drive equaled smoke. Drive now dead) and fighting getting the GRUB bootloader to work correctly, we are now back online.

The amount of RAM has actually been reduced to 256MB. This is, simply, because I do not have any other DDR RAM on hand. I plan to have this resolved in the next few weeks. Until then, the resources made up in gained processing power should make up for this.

What has changed:
Two network cards (ooohhh…)
AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2000+, 1 cores (aaahhh)
And lots of fans.

Site News: New Server Coming to Town

I’ll soon be upgrading to a newer server (still physically controlled by myself), a big jump from the current server (but still far from the bleeding edge of technology). My summer break from writing is ending, and I’ll soon be back at writing new technology news in the future weeks to come, but I will also begin focusing more on the music side of the site.

The new server will be a major improvement in terms of  NIC speed and processor speed — not so much in memory (since the current server is not low on memory, there is no need for an upgrade here), and many more fans. The old server will be kept as a backup, probably syncronizing on a regular basis, shutting down, and waiting for a WoL ping and a person to tell it to take over.

IRCD users, the change of servers for you should be fairly transparent. Notice will be given before the switchover.

These changes should occur in the next two weeks. The site should be accessible read-only during that time. I’d like to thank the folks at Cloudflare for making offline access possible during past times of failure (whether power, ISP, or NIC response failure) including what will happen in the near future.

Gmail: Priority Inbox

Google has just added (as in, last few hours) a new feature to Gmail called “Priority Inbox”. Priority Inbox automatically sorts out important messages from the not-so-important messages, allowing you to see what emails matter to you before others. Priority Inbox will improve itself based on how you “rate” emails. If you are a “change hater”, you’ll love this: It can be completely disabled, and is not enabled by default! If you don’t want to see your inbox with Priority Inbox, just click your regular inbox (“priority” items will still be marked).

After this feature was added, you should receive a prompt about Priority Inbox when you next log in. If you missed it, just check out your Gmail Settings and click the “Priority Inbox” tab.

More information about Priority Inbox is available at www.gmail.com/priorityinbox

September Site Update

It’s been a bit slow around here.

Earlier in the month: Two new networks were created on zylblog.com:
music.zylblog.com
featuring everything related to music, namely written/recorded, technical, and instrument-specific information.

winfix.zylblog.com

featuring helpful resources and information about common, and not-so-common computer issues. This blog will be the slowest moving when it comes to content. There is no bother subscribing, as this blog is only for the purposes of providing information to all the Googlers out there.

Both of these new blogs are fairly empty right now. We’ve exported only a few posts to the Music blog that were previously on the main blog. Don’t get too excited, it may be a while before they become established.

August 12: Permalinks issues completely resolved. No more /index.php/ before every link! And, if you click “Older Posts” to go to page 2, 3, 4, and on, it will no longer give you a 404 error page.

InfraRecorder: CD Burning Software (Windows)

InfraRecorder is a free, open-source CD/DVD burning program for Windows which allows you to burn ISO images, erase rewritable disks, prevent future writing to discs, duplicate discs, and create audio CD’s.

InfraRecorder is available for Windows 2000/XP/Vista in a 64 and 32 bit versions, as well as “portable” versions. The program is relatively small, at 3.27MB.
I use InfraRecorder to burn ISO images. ISO Burning only recently became included with Windows after the introduction of Windows 7. (If you don’t know how to do this, simply right click the ISO file and click “Burn to CD/DVD” and follow the instructions)

To download: http://infrarecorder.org/?page_id=5
To find out more: http://infrarecorder.org/

Do you have other CD Burning software that’s ad-free and and still free? Tell us about them in the comments.

Goings On at Server Headquarters:
On July 2nd and 3rd, we had a few bumps in server availability. Apache became unresponsive, even after a restart. Memory resources were becoming depleted, and was spilling over to the pagefile. Lots of starting and stopping Apache got it working again. I also pruned the enabled mods in Apache to increase security and reduce load.

July 11th, Google Ads just wasn’t pulling through what we expected, and we are now starting to remove Adsense from the site.

July 13, server was upgraded to an incredible, whopping, massive 4194304 kilobits (Okay, sounded bigger that way, right?) or 512MB. This should eliminate MySQL memory flooding and any Apache issues.

July 17, the WordPress installation was moved to the root directory. Type 304 redirects were set in place as well as redirects to deal with the old permalinks.

July 20, cleanup on a few of the old posts made prior to the decision to be dedicated to technology.

July 28, A freak storm hit Waterville, where the server is stashed away in a basement. Total downtime occurred for about one hour. I manually unplugged the server because the power was cycling, flickering, dimming, etc. The server kicks back on when power comes back on, but it was not work the risk taking to have it constantly going up and down. It was a good lightning show!

July 31, a second storm hit, causing a a ~5 minute power outage. Nothing damaged, everything came back up without flaw.

So, the jist of it? (since you read down all the way to the bottom, skipping nothing I am sure).. only one significant outage (more than 10 minutes) this month. Lots of planned improvements. Also, further progress on replacing the server has been made so we can handle more; I refuse to make promises at this time.
