One interesting thing that has changed with buying a computer in the last five years is the lack of a recovery CD. A lack of a recovery disc with a computer leaving the manufacturer has led to many problems for home-to-home PC repair persons such as myself. This isn’t the only problem that is noticeable, I find more and more people throwing away the documentation that came with their computers and any other CDs, especially for laptops.

Do you know where your recovery CD is? What about the manual for your computer? Even the tech-savvy need to keep these materials.

If your computer did not come with a recovery CD, you can probably burn one — and you should do that right after you read this article and comment. Look around your start menu for something along the lines of “Recovery disc creator” “Make restore discs” “Recovery Disc Creation”.
Run this program. Typically, it will only require a maximum of two DVDs to create a recovery disc, the total cost of 34ยข.

Buying a recovery CD from your manufacturer can cost $30 or more for what will take the company less than 5 minutes to prepare (issue order to get CD, grab CD from stock, put CD in envelope and seal, place stamp on envelope, write or print address on envelope, put envelope in mail). By the time you need a recovery CD, it may even be out of stock and they may not create a new CD for you.

That’s your money saving and computer tip of the day. Burn your recovery CDs, save $29.66.

Fun fact:
“Disc” normally refers exclusively to CDs, DVDs, and other round removable media.
“Disk” refers to floppies, hard drives, and other permentant (non-removable) storage.

About Jesse Zylstra

Hey! My name is Jesse Zylstra, and I am the administrator of this website. I used to write about free software and programs, online web applications, and new technology -- especially open-source. Now I just write udder nonsense. I also play pipe organ, which I'm told is a fun and interesting fact about me. In the past, I studied network administration. Now I've been trying to pursue a real fake bachelors degree for the last, oh, 10 years or so.
