OpenDNS: Family Shield

A few months ago, I introduced OpenDNS — An advanced DNS service which can help you improve lookup speeds and also filter your Internet using a method that is extremely difficult to bypass.

For those of you who want to protect your family, but found the setup settings too intimidating, OpenDNS now offers an easier way to get going: OpenDNS Family Shield.

Family Shield is automatically set up to block adult websites, phishing, malware, and proxy websites. OpenDNS and OpenDNS Family Shield will even protect the “Tech-Savvy” kids, as it is just plain hard to get past. To do more advanced configuration and add more blocked categories, you would need to proceed to getting a regular OpenDNS account, but Family Shield takes you half-way to that stage for you.

If you choose to configure your router to work with OpenDNS Family Shield, every computer and device which connects through that router is protected, including the WiFi Cell Phone, the Wii, the X-Box, the laptop upstairs, the computer in the basement — everything.

Family Shield also has a simple computer program which you can install on individual computers instead of on the whole network, but this is not as fool-proof.

Family Shield is more suitable for home networks. Educational, non-profits, and commercial operations should look at the regular OpenDNS or the premium versions.

About Jesse Zylstra

Hey! My name is Jesse Zylstra, and I am the administrator of this website. I used to write about free software and programs, online web applications, and new technology -- especially open-source. Now I just write udder nonsense. I also play pipe organ, which I'm told is a fun and interesting fact about me. In the past, I studied network administration. Now I've been trying to pursue a real fake bachelors degree for the last, oh, 10 years or so.
