Network Lights

Note: This program will not work with USB Keyboards properly!

There is a bug, if you begin to receive high network traffic to your website, high I/O traffic to your processor will cause your computer to slow down, especially key reaction time.

Network Lights on your keyboard.
Who uses the ScrollLock key anymore? I have not had a valid purpose for it in years — in fact, I no longer am able to remember its’ original purpose.

I found a neat program called Network Lights that can put the ScrollLock LED Indicator to use. http://www.itsamples.com/network-lights.html
Most computers now lack a visible network indicator, and laptops are often missing them entirely. Network Lights can fix this for you.

Providing that you have absolutely no programs which use the ScrollLock Key, Network Lights will give you a network indicator again, whether on a desktop or laptop. It may be wise to disable the NumLock LED in the program, however. Personally, I use the keypad, and it causes interference with using the keypad.

From their website:

“Network Lights is a Windows program, which blinks keyboard LEDs … indicating outgoing and incoming network packets on network interface.
Network Lights lets you monitor network activity (upload/download) from your keyboard ScrollLock and NumLock indicators. Each LED will flicker when network traffic is detected.”

A few advisories: I would not recommend changing the default timing to anything besides the default 100ms, which is already very fast. Faster would cause the program to use more CPU resources.

The bigger hunt, in my opinion, will be a hard-drive indicator for the scroll lock light… I looked and looked, but could not find one. Oh well.

About Jesse Zylstra

Hey! My name is Jesse Zylstra, and I am the administrator of this website. I used to write about free software and programs, online web applications, and new technology -- especially open-source. Now I just write udder nonsense. I also play pipe organ, which I'm told is a fun and interesting fact about me. In the past, I studied network administration. Now I've been trying to pursue a real fake bachelors degree for the last, oh, 10 years or so.
